Short notes

I started my research work in November 1988, thanks to a grant of Fujitsu-España aimed at developing a "vocoder at 1200 bps" in the Department of Electronics and Computers Technology of the UGR. During this year I became a member of the Research Group on Signals, Telematics and Communications (GiSTC; TIC123 Junta de Andalucía).

In January 1990, I was granted by IBM-España to investigate in the field of "automatic speech recognition". This work gave way in April 1991 to my dissertation entitled Recognition of Vocalic Phonemes with Time-based Schemes.

I have participated in a number of research works since my incorporation to the GiSTC. Focused my initial interest on automatic speech recognition, I obtained the Doctor degree in Physics in February 1996 with the Thesis entitled Continuous Speech Recognition with MVQHMM Techniques.

As a direct consequence of the research carried out, specially regarding my Thesis, the GiSTC developed in 1996 two telematic systems based on automatic speech recognition: STACC (Automatic Telephone System for Mark Consulting) and CABE (Automatic Telephone Switchboard with Voice-Box and Email Interface).

Since 2000 I have focused mi research activity on computer networks. Although I have done several works in this line (applications of audio and video transmission, e-learning, etc.), my main interest topic is about security in communications: intrusion detection and response, denial of service attacks, botnets, digital fraud, etc. Thus, I have done several contributions in this field: projects, collaborations, publications, etc.

With the aim of promoting my work and that of other colleagues in this field, we have created in 2012 the research group NESG: Network Engineering & Security Group (TIC-233, Andalucian Gouverment), of whom I am the head.

In 2021, I appeared in the Univ. Stanford list of “Ranking of the World Scientists: World´s Top 2% Scientists, which identifies the most influent international researchers.
